Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) Consent Form
Dear Parent/Guardian(s) of a Middle School Student,
To provide our students with the most effective, dynamic, and engaging learning experiences possible, Spectrum utilizes web-based tools and programs hosted by third-party providers, such as Google Apps for Education, Schoology, and other educational programs. For a complete list of programs, please visit our school website.
Some of these web-based programs collect certain personal identifying information from students to create access accounts or customize the learning experience. Generally, the student’s name, grade, and school email address are collected for site access. Under federal law, known as the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), website providers are required to provide notification to parents and obtain parental consent before collecting personal information from children under the age of 13. For more information on COPPA, please visit Complying with COPPA FAQ (https://www.ftc.gov/tips-advice/business-center/guidance/complying-coppa-frequently-asked-questions). The law permits school districts to consent to the collection of personal information on behalf of all of its students, thereby eliminating the need for individual website providers to obtain parental consent for each student.
By agreeing to the question below, you are giving permission for Spectrum High School to provide consent to collection of your child’s personal identifying information to third party websites for educational purposes only. You have the right to withhold consent; however, this will limit your child’s ability to collaborate and work online with other students and teachers. If your child does not have online access, his or her teachers will provide appropriate accommodations to ensure your child can still meet the course outcomes.
NOTE: Your student will not be able to use any online resources until we receive your consent.
